European Pact on Migration and Asylum launched

Update Explained
The European Pact on Migration and Asylum has introduced significant changes to the asylum procedures within the European Union. As part of this new framework, the Netherlands is implementing these changes through the Asylum and Migration Pact Implementation Act. The Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND) is reforming its processes to align with the Pact's requirements. Notably, the previous asylum procedure components such as the application interview and medical examinations are no longer standard. Instead, they will be tailored based on necessity. The deadline for processing applications via the accelerated procedure is now set at three months. Additionally, IND has new responsibilities under this system, such as online data entry and initial security and medical checks. Legal counselling is also provided to inform applicants of their rights and responsibilities. The duration of the temporary residence permit has been reduced from five years to three years, and the permanent residence permit has been entirely abolished. Furthermore, family reunification requirements have been tightened. These changes are intended to streamline and expedite the asylum process, providing clarity more swiftly to applicants.
