ISD urges customers intending to travel over the coming holiday period, whose current IRP card will expire, to submit a renewal application

Update Explained
The Immigration Service Delivery (ISD) has reported a high volume of applications for renewing the Irish Residence Permit (IRP) card, with current processing times ranging from 6 to 9 weeks. Additionally, once a renewal is completed, it can take up to two more weeks to receive the new IRP card by post. As traveling with a valid IRP card may be necessary, the Minister encourages those eligible to apply for renewal online promptly if their current IRP card will expire before or during their intended travel over the holiday period. Non-EEA nationals in the state are particularly advised to submit their renewal applications online via the ISD portal as soon as possible, as there is no guarantee that renewals submitted close to planned travel dates will be processed in time. The reliance on re-entry visas is discouraged, as they will only be considered in emergencies, and not for planned work-related or recreational travel. The validity period of renewed permission will be based on the current expiry date of the applicant’s IRP card, regardless of the renewal application submission or processing date.
