Update Explained

A new Reception Act will come into effect in Sweden on October 1, replacing the previous Act on Reception of Asylum Seekers (LMA). This Act extends the scope of individuals eligible for the Swedish Migration Agency's reception system and introduces new rules like geographical restrictions and control measures for asylum seekers and those with return decisions. Individuals with enforceable return decisions may remain covered by the Reception Act even after the decision becomes effective. The Act mandates that asylum seekers and those with return decisions stay within the county of their accommodation assigned by the Agency, and also introduces attendance checks for those staying in these centers. Moreover, there are enhanced conditions under which the daily allowance provided to migrants can be reduced. The legislation also alters the right to work for asylum seekers, now only allowing it if the Migration Agency hasn’t processed their application within six months, provided the delay is not their fault. Importantly, people from Ukraine with temporary protection are exempt from new geographical and work permit regulations. Lastly, the Act clarifies the role of municipalities in supporting individuals covered under it, ensuring adequate accommodation and services.

What changed

The new Reception Act replaces the Act on Reception of Asylum Seekers and broadens the coverage of individuals under the reception system while imposing new geographical restrictions and conditions for work and allowances.

Why it matters
