Update Explained

The Swedish government has announced new rules for labour immigration, which include changes to work permit requirements and exemptions for certain occupational groups. From June 1, 2026, a new salary requirement will be implemented, requiring applicants to earn at least 90 percent of the median salary in Sweden to obtain a work permit. However, approximately twenty occupational groups will be exempt from this salary threshold and will instead need to meet a requirement of 75 percent of the median salary. These exemptions will come into effect on June 1, 2026. Additionally, four other categories, including former students, certain healthcare professionals, individuals under temporary protection, and employees at young tech or life science startups, will also be eligible for the reduced salary requirement, starting June 11, 2026. Furthermore, employment in two specific occupations—personal assistants and forest berry pickers—will no longer be eligible for work permits. A new notification requirement for employers is introduced, mandating them to inform the Swedish Migration Agency if an employee with a work permit has not commenced work within four months of permit activation.
