Protection status S to continue, subject to further restrictions

Update Explained
The Federal Council of Switzerland has decided to extend the protection status S for people coming from Ukraine until 4 March 2028, due to the ongoing unstable situation in Ukraine and the lack of a foreseeable ceasefire. Protection status S is seen as an effective way to provide assistance to those fleeing the conflict while also easing the burden on the Swiss asylum system. This decision will continue the support programs, known as Programme S, which aid these individuals with integration efforts, including language support and access to education and employment, funded by the federal government. Additionally, a new restriction has been introduced in line with EU practices: to qualify for protection status S, new applicants must comply with military obligations in Ukraine, such as conscription requirements. However, this restriction does not affect those who already hold the status S. For Ukrainian nationals in Switzerland for five years, the Asylum Act allows them to receive a B residence permit linked to their protection status, unless this status is revoked.
What changed
Protection status S for new applicants now requires compliance with Ukrainian military obligations.
Why it matters
Individuals from Ukraine applying for protection status S in Switzerland from 20 August must comply with military obligations in Ukraine to be eligible. Support programs for those already having protection status S will continue until 2028.
Who is affected

- Ukrainian nationals of conscription age, on a reserve list, or who joined the armed forces
