Switzerland introduces Entry/Exit System

Update Explained
Switzerland is implementing a new Entry/Exit System (EES) to electronically register third-country nationals entering or leaving the Schengen area. This system will gradually be introduced starting at Basel and Geneva Airports on October 12, 2025, and later at Zurich Airport and smaller airports from mid-November 2025. The EES replaces manual passport stamping with electronic recording, calculates permitted stay durations, and records biometric data to improve identification and prevent identity fraud. The system also gives authorities better oversight for visa applications and crime prevention.
What changed
The EES replaces manual passport stamping with electronic recording and requires biometric data collection from third-country nationals entering the Schengen area.
Why it matters
Third-country nationals entering Switzerland or the Schengen area will need to provide biometric data and will no longer receive passport stamps after April 9, 2026. This may result in longer airport processing times initially.
Who is affected
- Third-country nationals requiring a visa
- Third-country nationals who are visa-exempt
