Update Explained

Switzerland has introduced a new cooperation programme for Kosovo, which was presented on April 27, 2026, by Patricia Danzi, the head of the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC). The programme, which will run from 2026 to 2029, allocates CHF 64.5 million to projects focusing on democratic governance, economic development, and equitable human development. This initiative will be implemented by the SDC, the Peace and Human Rights Division, and the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs. Switzerland has been cooperating with Kosovo since 1998, initially providing humanitarian aid and now focusing on building Kosovo's local institutions and governance. The new programme builds on previous efforts from 2022–25, which enhanced local governance services for many Kosovans. Switzerland also supports Kosovo's autonomy by aiding performance-based municipal financing, which the Kosovan government has integrated into its system. Additionally, the programme aims to support peace and stability in the Western Balkans, including encouraging dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia. Switzerland’s interest in cooperation with Kosovo is reinforced by mutual interests and the presence of a significant Kosovan diaspora in Switzerland.
