The Entry Exit System is fully operational since 10 April 2026. Who is exempt?

Update Explained
The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now fully operational at all external border crossing points within the Schengen area as of 10 April 2026. This system is part of an effort to modernize border management and enhance the security of the European Union. It applies specifically to non-EU nationals visiting the Schengen area for short stays, recording their travel document data, biometric data, and entry and exit information. However, certain individuals are exempt from these recordings and instead undergo traditional border checks. These exempt groups include nationals of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and holders of Vatican City State passports, non-EU nationals with long-stay visas or residence permits from countries operating the EES (except Cyprus or Ireland), and non-EU nationals who are family members of EU citizens or citizens of specific non-EU countries and hold a residence card or permit. In these cases, no biometric data such as fingerprints or facial images is recorded upon entry or exit from Schengen borders.
What changed
The implementation of the Entry/Exit System (EES) at all Schengen external border crossing points and the exclusion of certain individuals from biometric data registration.
Why it matters
Non-EU travelers on short visits to the Schengen area will have entry and exit data, including biometric information, recorded by the EES unless they fall into one of the exempt categories. Traditional document checks remain for exempt travelers.
Who is affected
