Update Explained

The UK government has introduced stricter rules for universities recruiting international students, in an effort to curb visa abuse. Universities may lose their ability to recruit international students if high dropout rates suggest students are working illegally instead of studying. New sponsorship rules feature penalties on a sliding scale for universities failing to meet recruitment standards. Increased pass marks for monitoring visa sponsors now require visa refusal rates to be below 5%, course enrolment rates at or above 95%, and course completion rates at or above 90%. The Home Secretary has also restricted study visas from certain countries due to rising asylum claims. Starting from summer 2027, a traffic light system will evaluate universities' recruitment practices, with those rated poorly facing potential recruitment bans and financial penalties. These measures are part of broader efforts to control immigration and reduce abuse associated with student visas.

The government will penalize universities with poor recruitment practices and has raised the standards for visa sponsor pass marks.
